Tibetan Chenrezig with four arms of the Bodhisattva of Compassion
Avalokiteshvara was the first bodhisattva, the compassionate one. He is the bodhisattva of compassion. He is believed to represent the understanding of all Buddhas. He holds a lotus in his hand, which is why he is called Padmapani. He is also the symbol of purity. Like the Lotus, he is born in the mud of the world, but remains unsullied by his religious principles. He cares about the beings of the world, their pain and suffering.
